It’s been 5 years since I started Wax+Cloth, and 6 since I began selling the things I made online. At the end of 2016 I left my day job to pursue working for myself full-time. The last 3 years have been challenging, educational, and the time away from the office has enabled me to dive into new and interesting projects.
2019 has been incredibly busy, but so wonderful. I married the best person I know in May, drove around Iceland, worked at a camp for kids on the spectrum, and built a set for Shrek, the musical. I’ve been able to build some lasting things for friends around Winston-Salem, like fixtures at UrbnGRL, and acoustic paneling at Camel City Sound.
As you might have guessed, this note isn’t merely a ‘life is good!’ message, it’s a notice that things are changing. My wife and I are moving to Shenzhen, China in 5 days, to teach at an international school. She’ll be teaching music, and I’ll be teaching English. This is a tremendous change, but one that we’re excited to make together. We’ve signed 2-year contracts, and while we certainly want to get back to our marvelous cats, there’s little sense in mapping out the future when we haven’t landed yet.
Wax+Cloth won’t be ending, just taking a long sabbatical. It’s something that would be impossible to run effectively whilst teaching for the first time, and besides that, we don’t have room to bring tools and materials. I’ll be sharing some of the adventures on the Instagram account, and look forward to seeing life back in Winston-Salem through your lenses.
Thanks for all your support and encouragement through the years!
